Susan's Background

Education.

Susan Farnsworth graduated with a BA from Bates College in 1969. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maine School of Law in 1976.

Employment.

From 1976 through 1987, Susan worked for Maine State government and during that time served as Chief Counsel in the Governor's Office of Employee Relations; Section Chief of the division of Attorney General Department serving the Maine Department of Labor; and Legal Advisor to the State Division of Community Services.

Prior to that she worked for the City of Lewiston as Program Coordinator for Manpower and Economic Development for Lewiston's Model Cities Program.

In 2001, she served for part of the year as Interim City Manager for the City of Hallowell.

Private Practice.

Susan first opened her law office in 1990 in Hallowell, Maine. Her practice has been based in Hallowell since then, except for a few years (August, 2006 through April, 2008) when her office was located in Gardiner, Maine.

Currently Susan is a solo practitioner doing business as “Susan Farnsworth, Attorney at Law.” Over the years she has employed other attorneys in her practice from time to time. During such periods her business was known as “Farnsworth & Associates."

Public Service & Community Activities.

From 1988 to 1994, she served as a State Representative in the State of Maine Legislature. She was elected for three two-year terms to represent District 91 (then Hallowell, Chelsea and Pittston). She was a member of the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committees on Judiciary and Taxation and chaired the Legislative Commission on Oil Spill Prevention.

Her current professional and community activities include:

  • Chair, Hallowell Water District
  • Chair, Hallowell Solid Waste and Recycling Committee
  • Member, Hallowell Area Board of Trade
  • Member, Rainbow Business and Professional Association, and
  • Member of the Kennebec Valley Art Association.

Previous activities included:

  • Trustee and Vice Chair (2008), Greater Augusta Utilities District
  • Member of the Executive Committee and an organizer of “Yes on 6” PAC (2000 Statewide Referendum Campaign)
  • Chair of the Labor and Employment Section of Maine State Bar Association (mid 80’s), and
  • Chair of the Lewiston Housing Authority Board of Commissioners (1974-1976).
